TOTAL LIPID PROFILE CHOLESTEROL TESTING
Cholesterol has become a household word in our
increasingly health-conscious society. High levels of
cholesterol in the blood are considered a major risk
factor in the development of coronary artery disease,
heart attacks and stroke. Atherosclerosis (hardening of
the arteries) is a major method by which cholesterol
causes cardiovascular diseases. Cholesterol accumulates
in the walls of the arteries, and combined with cellular
debris, produces plaques that can impair the flow of
blood until a blood clot forms. This clot can block the
artery, causing heart attack or stroke.
How to prevent and detect these diseases in the early
stages while they are treatable are major areas of
study. Too often, the first symptom of heart disease is
a fatal heart attack or stroke. Imagine the excitement
of doctors when they found that a high level of
cholesterol in the blood was often associated with heart
disease. The cholesterol content of the blood can be
measured by a simple blood test. In all adults aged 20
years or older, a fasting lipoprotein profile (total
cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL)
cholesterol, and triglyceride) should be obtained once
every 5 years, particularly for those that have a family
history of heart disease, diabetes or stroke.
With this simple finger stick the results of a total
cholesterol, tryglicerides, HDL (good cholesterol), LDL
(bad cholesterol), and TC/HDL ratio readings may be
obtained. This test is performed on the third Tuesday
and third Thursday of each month. It meets all relevant
National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines for
precision and accuracy. A nine to twelve hour fast is
required for accurate results. The cost for residents is
$25.00 for cholesterol and $30.00 for cholesterol and
glucose. For non-residents $30.00 and $35.00
respectively. Appointments may be made by calling (708)
403-4222.

GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN
In Illinois over 70,000 children are being raised in
homes where a grandparent or other relative is the sole
caregiver. A support group of peers can help by offering
emotional support, as well as guidance, assistance, and
advise to grandparents in their efforts to care for
their grandchildren. This program is not a therapy
support group, it offers a safe place where participants
are comfortable sharing their experience and hopefully
can learn from the experiences of others in the group.
The meetings are scheduled for the last Wednesday of
each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Orland Township Activity
Center. For more information please call Sue Bienias at
(708) 403-4222.

GARDASIL (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine)
HPV vaccine is an inactivated (not live) vaccine which
protects against four major types of HPV. Thee include
two types that cause about 70% of cervical cancer and
two types that cause about 90% of genital warts. HPV
vaccine can prevent most genital warts and most cases of
cervical cancer.
Protection from HPV vaccine is expected to be
long-lasting. But vaccinated women still need cervical
cancer screening because the vaccine does not protect
against all HPV types that cause cervical cancer.
In June 2006, the quadrivalent HPV vaccine types 6, 11,
16, 18, under the trade name GARDASIL® (manufactured by
Merck and Co.), was licensed for use among females aged
9-26 years for prevention of HPV-type-related cervical
cancer, cervical cancer precursors, vaginal and vulvar
cancer precursors, and anogenital warts. The vaccine is
administered by intramuscular injection, and the
recommended schedule is a 3-dose series with the second
and third doses administered 2 and 6 months after the
first dose. The recommended age for vaccination of
females is 11-12 years. Vaccine can be administered as
young as age 9 years. Catch-up vaccination is
recommended for females aged 13-26 years who have not
been previously vaccinated. Vaccination is not a
substitute for routine cervical cancer screening, and
vaccinated females should have cervical cancer screening
as recommended.
Gardasil is available at all Orland Township
Immunization Clinics for individuals who are nineteen
years of age or younger, free of charge. For those over
the age of nineteen, interested individuals may contact
Orland Township for the cost of the vaccine.
